Carnegie Mellon has been a leader in Artificial Intelligence since Herbert Simon and Allen Newell invented the field in the 1950s. Would you like to join us as the AI Architect? Say "Yes" and play a pivotal role in shaping the University's AI strategy, enabling innovative and practical solutions, and ensuring the successful implementation of AI initiatives. You will work closely with academic, administrative, and technical teams to apply artificial intelligence to enhance educational and operational effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities:

  • AI Strategy Development: Collaborate with senior leadership to define and implement an AI strategy, aligning it with the mission and goals of the institution.
  • Technology Evaluation: Evaluate and recommend AI technologies, frameworks, and appropriate tools. Identify and assess opportunities and address core market opportunities and use cases.
  • Technology Deployment: Build the foundation to promote exploration and development, focusing on ideation to production with an emphasis on enhancing the overall experience and productivity of the community.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with multi-functional teams, including data scientists, developers, and domain experts, to transform institutional requirements into practical AI solutions. Build close working relationships with technical and architecture teams to cultivate secure architectures and operational efficiency for applications and infrastructure, on-premises and in the cloud. Act as a campus advocate for promoting AI strategic activities and projects.
  • Research and Innovation: Stay ahead of AI trends and emerging technologies in the higher education sector and propose innovative ideas for AI integration.
  • Ethical AI: Ensure ethical standards are applied and promote fairness, transparency, and inclusivity for diverse communities and teams.
  • Training and Education: Develop and deliver training programs and workshops for staff and faculty to increase literacy and foster AI adoption.
  • Documentation: Build and maintain a comprehensive library of AI architecture, processes, and solutions for reference and auditing purposes.
  • Security and Compliance: Collaborate with the security team to ensure that AI solutions follow relevant regulations and standard processes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor's or Master's in computer science, information systems, data science, artificial intelligence, or a related field.
  • At least 4 years of public cloud experience with a provider such as Google Cloud Platform, AWS, or Azure. Experience with AI services provided on public clouds, such as Azure Cognitive Services, AWS SageMaker, Google Vertex.AI.
  • Minimum of 7 years enterprise IT application experience, including at least two years of hands-on software development, DevOps engineering, systems administration, or systems architecture.
  • Solid understanding and practical experience building, maintaining, and operating AI technologies, machine learning, and data analytics in a production environment.
  • Proficiency in programming languages, methodologies, and API frameworks, such as Infrastructure as Code, REST, Python, R, or Java.
  • Hands-on technical experimentation with cloud systems and local models.

Preferred

  • Experience in higher education
  • Familiarity with data privacy regulations, such as GDPR and HIPAA
