The Senior Cloud Systems Engineer will lead the deployment, operation, maintenance, and performance of IEEE cloud environments. As a senior member of the Cloud Engineering team, he/she will review physical architecture designs of software applications from a system engineering perspective and will ensure that the systems, upon deployment, operate according to availability and performance specifications.

The Cloud Engineering team is a sub-team of the IT Strategy and Enabling Technologies (ITSET) team, which is responsible for defining and executing our IT strategy and enabling technology used in support of IEEE's mission of fostering technological innovation and excellence. As a member of this dynamic team, the Senior Cloud Systems Engineer will be afforded plenty of opportunities to broaden his/her professional horizon by participating in technology-driven innovation, workplace digitalization, mobile presence enablement, enterprise architecture, and technology standardization/rationalization activities.

An individual in this position reports to the Cloud Strategy Director and functions as an individual contributor.

Education

* Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science or engineering field Req

Work Experience

* 4-7 years of Cloud and system engineering experience Req

* 4-7 years of General programming and systems administration experience Req

Skills and Requirements

* Strong Unix system administrator skills. Strong Perl/shell scripting, Strong Unix OS fundamentals, J2EE design patterns, multi-threading application development, web service architecture, Cisco F5, LDAP. Knowledge of Wily Introscope, Compuware, or other monitoring utilities.

* Strong communication skills are required to engage in spontaneous brainstorming sessions with highly proficient technical peers.

* Presentation skills/size of audiences. Moderate presentation skills are required.

* Writing skills. Moderately proficient in written English to convey ideas via email and technical documents.

* Ability to understand and interpret written information skills are required to understand highly technical documents.

* Foreign language skills. None required.

* Excellent interpersonal skills are required as the incumbent will serve in a sensitive role as an unbiased arbiter of potential conflicts between development staff and network/system administrator staff. Included in the daily contacts are Developers, Quality Assurance Analysts, Network Admins, and Systems Admins who will work with the incumbent to identify root causes of application failures; mid- and senior-level managers who will rely on the incumbent to deliver accurate assessments of performance issues.

* Troubleshoot and identify the source of poor application performance at the network, OS, and application layers. This will require off-hours involvement as some applications are mission-critical.

* Set up development environments for a variety of applications; work with other staff to transition from development to production.

* This is a senior-level position and will require substantial individual decision-making.
