Under the broad direction of the Network Services Manager, the Wireless Network Engineer will be responsible for the integrity and high availability of the campus wireless network, including the management of all site planning, RF, and WLAN design in a dense urban environment. In addition they will provide expert level problem resolution, troubleshooting, and the high level of technical support required for the operations of both the college’s wired and wireless network environment. This includes IP assignment, AP and switching break/fix, and vlan architecture as well as wireless troubleshooting.

The Wireless Network Engineer will be a key participant in the determination of network and business requirements, both making and implementing recommendations for its enhancement. They may lead, plan, and execute large/major projects as assigned by the Network Services Manager and Director of Systems and Networks, as well as play an integral part in our transition to Role Based Networking.

This job will require in person installation work and troubleshooting, but can support some remote work as well.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides both low and high level hands-on network troubleshooting and maintenance of the Berklee network. This includes both wired and wireless network hardware, software, and network onboarding services on an ongoing basis.
  • Provides design, setup, and configuration of the college’s complex network environment, including WLAN design and remediation, and identity based network access.
  • Researches and evaluates new products and service offerings that would be beneficial and cost effective to the college, and when appropriate. Makes recommendations in writing for improving the college’s network environment.
  • Interacts with vendors and manages vendor service levels.
  • Responds to customer network issues and requests utilizing the Jira ticketing system in a timely, service oriented, and efficient manner, and escalates appropriately as needed.
  • Monitors network traffic such as networked port use, network bandwidth utilization, and wireless network usage. An ideal candidate will be able to identify network issues both in the air and through the wire.
  • Manages mid-size to large network projects via the Project Portfolio Management process and guidelines when appropriate.
  • Manages backups, security issues, provides disaster recovery planning, and applies software upgrades, management and administration of services/devices that support the network.
  • Provides college sponsored application support in a collaborative effort with other IT service organizations.
  • Handles various other projects as assigned by the Network Services Manager and Director.
  • Maintains a constructive, team-oriented and customer-focused attitude at all times and in all settings.
  • Maintains operating procedures and associated documentation.
  • Follows Network and Telecommunications/IT Operations Guidelines.
  • Hands on Troubleshooting and installation of network devices.

Possible Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Be prepared for a flexible work schedule based on the college academic calendar, which could require staff resources to occasionally be available in non-business hours or weekend, to participate in events, projects, maintenance, or critical repair situations.
  • Participates in inter-departmental projects as department representative.
  • May provide consultative direction and support for key collaborative, Unified Communications, and other network application related solutions.
  • May be required to create business cases/justifications and presentations to support department initiatives.
  • Assigned research projects at the discretion of the Network Services Manager and Director of Network and Telecommunications.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent professional experience and 5-8 years of experience in a network engineering role, with at least 3 of them focussed on wireless technologies.
  • High level working knowledge of IPAM, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, OSPF, IP Routing, BGP, VLANs, VOIP, QoS, Trunking, VPN, Spanning Tree, Access Control List, HSRP, firewalls, as well as the networking aspects and operating systems of both Macintosh, Linux, and Windows environments.
  • Strong Knowledge of WIFI and Ethernet IEEE standards and protocols.
  • Experience with wifi spectrum analysis and planning tools such as Ekahau for designing, surveying and troubleshooting wireless issues and to ensure a well designed wireless network and reduce downtime.
  • constantly monitor and develop our wireless infrastructure, making recommendations on system enhancements for optimization.
  • Knowledge of network security controls i.e Firewalls, IDS and IPS. Cisco and Palo firewall experience is a plus.
  • Design and validate RF link performance, quality and reliability.
  • Experience with Cisco Wireless Controllers and Cisco Access Points is a plus.
  • Experience in administration of DNS and DHCP services. Using IPAM Administration to track and assign ip addresses. InfoBlox experience is a plus.
  • Experience with nomadic 911 is a plus.
  • Experience using network monitoring tools for reporting on IP traffic and bandwidth utilization.
  • Knowledge of Software defined networking (SDN), Identity Based Networking (IBN), Network Access Control (NAC), Micro Segmentation, BYOD and IoT. Experience with Cisco ISE a plus.
  • High-level working knowledge and experience with Cisco products and services.
  • Cisco CCNA certification a plus.
  • Experience working within most business critical networks (prefer 500+ computer users) installing, supporting, and administering network services and Internet connectivity through various media (i.e. wire, fiber and wireless). Experience in Higher Ed a plus.
  • Experience working with project teams; responding to pre-set project goals and objectives, leading and assigning team members with assignments, reporting on outcome and completion.
  • Strong technical writing skills and ability to communicate to business customers in non-technical terms when needed.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to explain the functioning and operation of the campus network to users and vendors.
  • Strong analytical skills in order to assist users in recognizing and troubleshooting network problems.
  • Strong organization skills in order to assimilate and disseminate new information.
  • Ability to stay abreast of current developments in networking and wireless hardware and software through active research and occasional class or seminar attendance.
  • This position may provide an opportunity for limited remote work.
