Would you like to help grow and manage the maturing data-informed decision culture at Carnegie Mellon University, using data to strategically find opportunities and solve challenges in support of our academic mission to cultivate a transformational university community?

The Principal Data Applications Administrator in the Enterprise Information Systems team manages, in partnership with other team members, some of the core cloud and non-cloud based technologies for the university Data management and analytics infrastructure, with primary responsibilities around Snowflake and Tableau, and secondary responsibilities interacting with our Data Management Infrastructure.

This individual will be a key member of the central Data Management team at the University, working collaboratively with data professionals to ensure CMU’s enterprise data resources are operating efficiently, robustly and with increasing scalability to support a data strategy driving organizational changes and improvements.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Participate in or lead the architecture of solutions for others to build, either in the local team or with other teams.
  • Figure out problems with limited direction, using intuition to anticipate issues and opportunities.
  • Plan, document scope and estimate work effort, producing quality deliverables on time and budget.
  • Build and architect solutions from a framework perspective thus ensuring reusability vs. building siloed solutions.
  • Develop solutions into future standards
  • Design and implement scalable, performant data pipelines, data services, and data products.
  • Work with noisy, dirty and unstructured data to cleanse, scrape and convert it into structured data
  • Evaluate, benchmark and improve the scalability, robustness, efficiency and performance of big data platforms and applications
  • Explore and evaluate new products and industry standards
  • Work with multiple multi-functional teams to develop these solutions.
  • Create and manage reporting dashboards
  • Help produce and manage data metrics
  • May lead project efforts
  • May provide feedback and coaching for other team members
  • Work with Informatica support on architectural and product issues, helping to develop a closer partnership
  • Improve our Informatica implementations and provide future guidance and structure
  • Work with Tableau team in establishing Data Source Connections and administration, Application Performance Monitoring , Tableau Upgrades , platform health check , Disaster Recovery and Incident Management.
  • Other duties as assigned

You should demonstrate:

  • Proficient in at least one RDBMS platform such as Snowflake, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle
  • Have a good understanding of extract, transform and load (ETL or ELT) tools (Informatica, DBT, etc.)
  • Strong SQL writing skills
  • Proficient in scripting languages such as Python , SQL, Perl, etc.
  • Understand and use REST-oriented APIs
  • Knowledge of data security and governance standard processes and practical application

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field required; Master’s degree preferred
  • 5-8 years of experience in systems software engineering and/or systems programming experience required
  • Or a combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated
