Marine Robotics Research Engineer
Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute’s (MBARI’s) engineering department is offering rare opportunities to collaborate with leading ocean researchers in shaping the future of ocean technology at our state-of-the-art facilities in Moss Landing, CA.
Reporting to Principal Engineer Dr. Giancarlo Troni, MBARI’s CoMPAS (Control, Modeling, and Perception of Autonomous Systems) Lab seeks a Research Engineer for a program focused on marine robotics. This lab aims to develop and transfer technology for making ocean exploration more accessible and widespread, based on improved methods for more intelligent, precise, and targeted data collection with scalable autonomous marine platforms. The candidate must have a background in an engineering field with experience in robotics and demonstrable programming skills. The candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team with other scientists and engineers, developing advanced robotic perception, estimation, and control algorithms, including testing in the laboratory and offshore. The responsibilities and opportunities associated with this position will evolve and grow along with the lab’s interests, including those of the incumbent. As such, the ability and desire to learn new skills are imperative.
Excellent organization and planning skills, experience in field robotics, and demonstrated skills in scientific writing are highly desirable. The position may include occasional oceanographic cruises, travel to distant and remote places, and scientific meetings.
Minimum Requirements:
• Master’s degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated success in robotics, software development, and data analysis.
• Experience with Python, C++, or similar programming environments.
• Ability to work under time pressure in a multi-tasking work environment.
• Excellent interpersonal, critical thinking, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications to include any or all of:
• Experience with publishing research papers.
• Experience with robotics software, such as ROS and other open source libraries.
• Demonstrable experience with computer vision and machine learning tools.
• Demonstrable experience with project management or fieldwork.
The position will remain open until filled with the first review date of October 10, 2022. MBARI offers a competitive compensation and benefits package consistent with peer positions at other non-profit and academic institutions.
