APPLICATION SUPPORT SPECIALIST (Application/Systems Emphasis)

The City of Everett is accepting applications on an open/competitive basis for the Civil Service examination process for Application Support Specialist (Application/Systems emphasis).

This is highly responsible technical work in the areas of development and support, project coordination, problem analysis, and troubleshooting related to application systems. Depending on the functions of the position to which assigned, an employee in this classification performs application analysis, support, and programming.

The work involves the study and documentation of specific business and system requirements; and planning, scheduling, and coordinating efforts to install and upgrade various application systems. The work also involves supporting PC’s, servers, and related hardware and software to support systems and applications. Employees in this class may program using various programming languages. As technology changes, the employees’ focus and skills will progress and their duties and assignments will evolve; but they will continue to be expected to perform at the level and scope intended for this classification.

Additional duties may include applications systems planning, integration, support, cost analysis, and creating and presenting training materials. The work is performed with some independence under the general guidance of the supervisor or designee. Employees in this classification may be required, at times, to support a combination of assignments as assigned by the supervisor.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduation from a recognized four year college or university with a degree in business, math, computer science, or a closely related field, AND
  • A minimum of three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in software development which should include experience in writing applications using various programming languages, or experience supporting, troubleshooting and documenting 3rd party software applications and productivity tools;
    OR
  • Any combination of education and experience sufficient to provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • Possession of a valid driver license at the date of hire, and the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Washington State Driver License within 30 days of hire.

EXAMINATION STEPS

  • There will be a pre-screening of all applications.
  • Responses to the supplemental questionnaire will be individually reviewed and evaluated (weighted 30%).
  • Top-scoring applicants will be called to a remote oral panel interview (weighted 70%), tentatively scheduled for September 22.
  • All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months.
  • A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
  • The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Applicants claiming veterans’ preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214 or other official military separation documentation that clearly indicates an honorable discharge from military service on or before the date filing closes.
