It’s estimated that nearly 1 in 10 people will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime, affecting people of every identity and background — yet up to 90% will not get the care they deserve. Arise exists to change that, connecting people with inclusive, personalized support for disordered eating, eating disorders, and mental health.

With its person-centered approach to care, Arise aims to shatter the stereotype of what eating disorders “look like” and break down barriers and stigma to bring people care that works for them. Through virtual care pathways, community, and ongoing support, Arise brings people the right care, where and when they need it. Founded by Amanda D’Ambra and Joan Zhang out of their own healing journeys from eating disorders, Arise is built by and for people who have been there, too — together, we’re empowering effective support for long-term healing.

Our values

  • Listen to lead. We’re not going to have all the answers. To effectively serve every person’s healing journey, we must start by humbly listening to and elevating all voices and experiences.
  • All bodies have value. We’re here for people of any age, race, size, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, and background, because everyone deserves to be understood, respected, and supported.
  • We’re all human. Being human means that we celebrate our successes together and support each other through the low points. We give each other the space to rise and fall and rise again.

We’re looking for a Head of Engineering to be a key part of building our innovative care products and be an awesome leader as we build our team and culture

About the role

We are looking for a passionate & experienced engineering leader to build an innovative, tech-enabled experience for eating disorder and mental health support. This leader will be experienced with and interested in designing the technical architecture from the ground up, with an eye towards building up our engineering team in the near future. This individual believes in the importance of building relationships on the foundation of mutual trust, respect, collaboration, and is excited to partner with clinical, product, and business leadership.

The ideal candidate for this role will be excited about driving innovation and breaking down barriers in the eating disorder and mental health space, an advocate for diverse and inclusive culture, experienced in managing teams, and passionate about the opportunity to support people who come from many different backgrounds.

  • Manage team: Effectively manage and inspire an external team of contracted engineers to sustainably ship a thoughtful care experience for our patients, providers, and partners
  • Recruiting & team building: attract, recruit, mentor, and retain a high quality, diverse team of engineers and coordinate cross-team collaboration with contracted engineers
  • Product development process & execution: establish our product development process ensuring high velocity and quality of engineering output that reliably meets our company timelines & milestones
  • Code quality & standards: define standards to ensure the high levels of quality, performance, scalability, and reliability of the codebase and technical infrastructure while balancing the relative prioritization of these standards with company objectives

What we’re looking for:

  • Management Experience: Have experience leading and managing people and have actively coached / mentored team members in their careers. You help set best practices for the team and lead by example
  • Technical Leadership: Have experience with operating at the tech-lead level and have designed full technical architecture of a platform with several integrations. You are willing to jump into the code to understand, contribute and/or troubleshoot technical issues
  • Product Thinker: Desire to build through a user-centric lens and be involved not only in engineering decisions but product and design decisions as well
  • Team Player: You are a partner to leaders across the organization and take a pragmatic approach to technology that enables space for collaborative trade-offs and balanced decision-making
  • Strong Communicator: You possess a clear and engaging communication style (verbal and written) with a track record of building positive relationships across a broad diverse organization and can comfortably communicate technical details with people outside of engineering
  • Startup Experience: You have worked in a startup or on your own side projects and built products from the ground up. You’re excited by ambiguity and see it as an opportunity to uncover unique and new insights

Nice to have:

  • You enjoy working in the complexities of healthcare and are comfortable with electronic health record and practice management software systems
  • You are experienced working with the security and compliance requirements in the healthcare industry
  • You have prior experience with web and mobile app development and are comfortable with technologies like React and/or Flutter
