FishChoice launched in 2008 with a mission to create tools and relationships that increase the efficiency of the ocean conservation movement by providing scalable solutions for the seafood industry and NGOs working on marine sustainability. Within the sustainable seafood movement, FishChoice has focused on using technology and transparency to help retailers, restaurants and suppliers' source, sell and promote sustainable seafood. In short, we help the oceans by making the seafood industry more sustainable and we use the web to make this happen.

We currently run two Drupal websites to meet this mission—FishChoice.com (updated and re-launched in 2020) and FisheryProgress.org which is about to undergo a ground-up rebuild. They are both used extensively by their core users for a variety of functions. We are also seeking new projects for the coming year(s).

FishChoice is seeking a part-time contractor to work in the Technical Program Manager role to oversee the day-to-day work of planning, executing and managing a major website rebuild. This will be a direct bridge between our development and our programs teams. This person will bring strategic business insights and technical understanding to managing the nuts and bolts of building and maintaining unique tools to help ocean conservation and sustainable seafood.

Needs

● Develop project plans to guide us through phases of development

● Manage sprints—planning and execution—for ongoing development and epics

○ Hold planning meetings with each or both teams to prepare for the next sprint

○ Work with the team to prioritize items in the queue for sprints, including time estimates from developers and designers

○ Ensure sprints stay on track

● Assist in gathering requirements & manage the development backlog

● Create, maintain and update development requests via Trello or a similar tools

● Manage the prioritization and tracking of essential bug fixes when they arise

● Knowledgeably answer questions from the dev team for specific items being worked on to ensure correct execution

● Embed yourself within the program team as a trusted ally and credible voice during sprints and development

● Manage the QA process, which may include yourself, a contract QA Specialist, as well as others depending on the item being reviewed

● Work with the Director of Technology to ensure projects remain in scope and meets business needs

● Seek opportunities to improve process and outcomes

Skills

● Proven experience delivering websites/web applications and experience working on the aspects noted above

● Fluency in website architecture and relevant tools, frameworks, plugins, ideally within the Drupal framework

● Experience working with Scrum, Kanban, and Agile-style approaches to project management

● Proven robust communications skills including listening and clarity in both verbal and written interactions

● Ability to juggle multiple projects at different phases simultaneously

● Knowledge of project management tools such as Trello or Jira

● Ability to insert one’s own creativity into projects/products

● Ability to translate between business needs and developer-speak

● Strength in QA process design, management and accountability

● Comfort and experience with remote working

Location

This position can be remote but candidates must be willing to work in the Pacific time zone on a daily basis for much of the day. Currently part of our team is based in Fort Collins, CO where our main office is located and the rest are scattered about the West Coast and elsewhere. The manager of this position is in Portland, OR.

This is a half-time (20-24 hrs/week) contract position, billed hourly, with an hourly rate of $80, paid bi-weeky. No other benefits are offered. This project is expected to last approximately 12 months.
