Job Summary

Manage and secure City of Vancouver physical and virtual MS Windows and Linux servers, networked data storage arrays and associated software and hardware peripherals. As Windows server administrator, manage Microsoft Active Directory users, group policies, sites and services. Provide support for a variety of server software and hardware including, but not limited to: VMWare ESXI hypervisor, Microsoft Intune Mobility and Security, Data storage arrays, Mobility VPN, AD Connect, and Microsoft Azure. Advise on technical issues, ensure system and storage, coordinate server and application upgrades and perform remediation and troubleshooting during unscheduled incidents.


Essential Functions:

  • Create and manage virtual and physical servers, monitor resource utilization, and adjust as needed. Develop backup and incident response plans for the server environment, ensure backups are running properly, and perform restores from backup as needed.
  • Analyze data storage needs and recommend disk storage array purchases. Install and configure storage arrays and monitor I/O and space utilization for potential issues.
  • Support server security, working with ISO, network and desktop staff, including Azure/Office 365 tenant, including managing Microsoft Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint Online.
  • Assist users and vendors with upgrading server and cloud-based applications.
  • Support Citrix NetScaler environment.
  • Support Microsoft forest and domains via Active Directory. Set up and configure user accounts, security groups, sites and services, and develop group policies to be applied to servers, computers and users accounts.
  • Create new databases as requested utilizing Microsoft’s SQL Server. Configure and establish security for the databases as needed.
  • Assess security and recommend policies and procedures relating to the City’s servers, network and cloud-based application platforms.
  • Develop scripts in Powershell to automate repetitive functions.
  • Manage the following critical services for the City’s Windows Server environment: DNS, DHCP, DFS, Certificate Services, IIS, MSCS.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Experience and Education:

  • Five (5) years of system administrator experience managing a complex Windows server environment.
  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in computer science or related field.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Required Licenses and/or Certificates:

Possession of:

  • Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE) desired, not required
  • Appropriate, valid driver’s license preferred

Computer Skills:

  • Microsoft Office and PowerShell
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft PowerShell and command-line scripting

Knowledge:

  • System administration principles and concepts
  • Information technology (IT) security principles
  • Local area and wide area networking principles and concepts including bandwidth management.
  • Measures or indicators of system performance and availability
  • System performance tuning tools and techniques
  • Server administration and systems engineering concepts
  • Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Server planning, management and maintenance
  • Microsoft Windows, Active Directory, VMWare ESXI, NetScaler appliances, MS Exchange
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
  • Use of personal computers and basic software

Abilities:
