On a mission to shape new mobility and stop climate change.

In 2026 with our Volkswagen project #Trinity we will be ready for automated driving on level 4 – therefore it’s necessary to have a high performance chip. I am very happy that we will get system-on-chips (SoCs) designed to enable assisted and automated driving functions up to Level 4 from Qualcomm, an expert in chip design with over 140.000 patents! I had a great meeting two weeks ago in San Diego with Qualcomm-CEO Cristiano R. Amon and their Automotive Chief Nakul Duggal to align on our cooperation. The chips of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Ride portfolio will be used in all Group vehicles with the unified CARIAD Software generation starting in the middle of the decade. Important: That doesn’t mean that we stop to work with Intel – the opposite is going to be reality: We want to expand our very successful partnership with Mobileye, are already in talks. In the current ID.-vehicles the customers can already benefit from their great technology with the travel assist based on swarm data. And for the next generation of our #software used by AUDI AG & Porsche AG we want to have Mobileye stronger implemented to enable the cars for convenient and reliable level 2 ++ automated driving.   Important steps, CARIAD is getting faster, and to be clear: It’s the most ambitious project of our entire industry to tap into the most relevant profit pools of the future – it will need two lifecycles to get realized, so I would like to say to the critics within the Group: it is better to work together on progress than just to complain. Let’s go!

I visited Amnon Shashua ( we share also the passion for motorbikes!) and our former colleague Johann Jungwirth in Israel in February. The autonomous driving experience itself was very, very impressive. The L2++ camera only system manages the really complicated traffic in Israel, we drove for 45 minutes without any intervention – so it makes sense for us to implement Mobileye also in our next generation of software.

Our experience at ESPRiT Engineering, having worked closely within many CARIAD domains, is that there is a great spirit of optimism. Despite the challenges inherent in the integration of multiple corporate structures, the solution orientation prevails. I see CARIAD within the VW family very positively.

Who cares about Level 4 in 4 Years? Level 5 is the game changer.

SoC - > System-on-a-Chip SoC - > State of Charge ... a good example why abbreviations are not always a "good idea" 😉 Talking about "tomorrow" and the use of "swarm data"... just a thought: What if "visual only" will be the way to go in 2026 for Level 4 or 5? What if "some other (big) swarm data" and AI makes Lidar and Radar obsolete? What if "such other (big) swarm data" is based on a different hardware periphery and possibly may lead the market in 2026? Let"s hope there is a "Plan B" for Volkswagen?

Thanks Herbert Diess for explicit statement about the importance of technology partnerships and eco-systems to accelerate transformation within the automotive industry. Strong partnerships + softwarization = accelerated automotive transformation.  #automotive #autonomous #softwarization

Very content working 3 days a week at home, recruiters need not pester me ☺️

What about also using LiDAR for redundancy? Tesla has already shown through many crashes that a camera based system can put the lives of the driver and their passengers at risk. LiDAR thrives at night unlike camera based systems. Microvision has developed dynamic LiDAR that works day and night, in sunshine and rain at 80 mph, and it could be used to detect puddles and black ice. Immune to all other LiDAR units too and with a very high resolution and frame rate.

Herzlichen Dank!

Great move, Herbert and Dirk. This is an important step for Volkswagen’s future value proposition and strategic plan to become a vertically integrated mobility provider. Autonomous driving will be a key value driver for NEW AUTO and the cooperation with Qualcomm enables us to constantly bring new customer experiences to the market at large scale. Exciting times ahead.
