Summary: This Senior Web Developer will provide both operational leadership and hands-on custom development for the University WordPress instance. In addition to producing well-documented, SOLID code, this position will take a leadership role in the WordPress governance group. The position will partner with clients, project managers, and highly technical subject matter experts to manage, secure, and evolve WordPress at Wake Forest. The position will also implement maintenance and security releases while also developing new feature requests and applying bug fixes. The Senior Web Developer will have significant growth opportunities with many technologies, platforms, and managerial concepts.

Job Description

This Job Is For You If You Are Able To….

  • Help ensure a stable WordPress environment; improve WordPress functionality.
  • Understand business challenges and leverage or create web-based, internally developed solutions.
  • Support vendor applications and use APIs to interface with WFU custom applications.
  • Interact with databases and understand data concepts, including querying and editing records while adhering to business processes and best practices.
  • Participate in or lead the WordPress Governance group.
  • Maintain well-documented, reusable, and transferable code; use GIT.
  • Ensure appropriate change management, including communication.
  • Implement deployment and upgrade schedules.
  • Provide backup for other developers of related skills; help administer code reviews, test and perform maintenance and support.

What Skills Do You Need?

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related technical field (or equivalent experience) and five years or more of web development experience.
  • Expert level full-stack PHP developer, well-versed in modern best practices.
  • Expert knowledge of JavaScript, CSS, and HTML.
  • Expert level WordPress experience including custom plugin development, custom theme development, and building solutions to business needs using ACF.
  • Experience using version control tools (such as GIT) a must.
  • Experience with jQuery, MySQL, SQL, APIs, JSON, XML.
  • Must be able to work well in a collaborative development environment.
  • Must show a growth mindset. Willingness to learn new skills, frameworks and programming languages.
  • Must demonstrate ability to see and understand problems and opportunities, then be able to apply technical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to see the big picture, understanding goals and functions of departments across Wake Forest University to see how development work impacts the University as a whole, not just each specific piece.
  • Ability to define and communicate a technical vision with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to think creatively and problem solve using data and technology.

Desired Skills and Abilities: As the incoming Senior Web Developer, you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • Node JS Experience.
  • React experience (specifically Gutenberg blocks).
  • Experience with agile development, GIT version control, SOLID coding standards, object-oriented programming concepts.
  • Experience with Docker.
  • Experience with AWS infrastructure including S3, EC2, Elastic Beanstalk, Lambda, and CloudWatch.
