Job-Specific Responsibilities
The Public Interest Tech Lab

is in need of full-time developers, preferably with some python and AWS

cloud experience. Knowledge of app development, machine learning

algorithms, and/or multiparty computation is a plus. Willingness to

learn new tools and methods necessary. We have several groundbreaking

"save the world" and "tech for society" projects underway at the Tech Lab.

You would join our team of developers, who are building models of

alternative online app and privacy platforms, and working on voting,

misinformation, and manufacturing infrastructures. Employment would be

full-time at Harvard with benefits.

This role will serve on the Facebook Archive Project (fbarchive.org)

team and work closely with the Public Interest Tech Lab and the

Technology and Social Change Project teams at the Shorenstein Center.

About the Shorenstein Center
The

Shorenstein Center is a research center based at the John F. Kennedy

School of Government at Harvard University, with a mission to study and

analyze the power of media and technology and its impact on governance,

public policy and politics.

Typical Core Duties

  • Participate fully in software development life cycle
  • Implement and support technical solutions to deliver business requirements
  • Identify and evaluate opportunities to improve services
  • Contribute ideas to coding best practices and new technologies
  • Draw on relationship and technical skills to act as technical liaison to internal and external clients
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct

This position is a fully benefits-eligible term appointment ending one year from date of hire, with possibility of renewal.

Salary Range: $69,100 - $116,100
Note:

Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range;

however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position,

the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience



Additional Qualifications and Skills

Any combination of the following, a plus:

- Proficiency with web technology including DNS, Nginx/Apache, LetsEncrypt

- Proficiency in AWS: ec2, S3, VPC, IAM

- Programming experience in Python and PHP

- Experience managing web services in a Linux environment

- Experience managing Flask applications

- Strong communication and writing skills

- Experience handling backup strategies within AWS

- Additional AWS services: CloudWatch, RDS, Lambda, Cognito
