Job Description

This position offers the exciting opportunity to help drive innovation at the New York City Department of Transportation. This is a new role within the agency and the position will be responsible for partnering with units across the agency in developing and executing the first ever unified research and development agenda for the agency. The senior advisor will research new technologies, explore new partnership models with the private sector and research institutions, develop technology pilots in partnership with other units, and facilitate intra-agency collaboration on technology development and deployment. This position will focus on the nexus of technology and policy and explore how NYCDOT can leverage technological advances in range of areas to better achieve its mission. Areas of focus may include: green freight technology, video analytics applications for data collection and enforcement, smart city technology, big data applications, materials research, and technology-enabled customer communications. R&D activities will continue to be distributed across the agency’s divisions, so the senior advisor will work closely with other senior managers in multiple divisions, as well as the agency’s Chief Technology Officer and the IT department. The position will also be responsible for engaging with the tech sector, interfacing with research institutions in New York and beyond, and remaining abreast of major trends and developments in transportation-related technologies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

  1. A master’s degree in public policy, transportation planning, public administration, engineering, computer science, information technology, management or other related field; or
  2. A baccalaureate degree in in public policy, transportation planning, public administration, engineering, computer science, information technology, management or other related field from an accredited college and one year of full-time satisfactory experience working in the transportation, technology, research and development or other related field; or
  3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in 2" above; or
  4. An associate degree or completion of 60 college credits from an accredited college and four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in 2" above; or
  5. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in 2 above.

Preferred Skills:

The preferred candidate has a strong background in research and development, engineering, computer science, information technology, smart cities technology, or other related field, is a highly motivated self-starter, and has the ability to work collaboratively toward common goals. The ideal candidate has overseen the development and implementation of complex technology projects that involve a range of stakeholders or clients, including technologists and non-technology focused managers. Experience working in the public sector, with public sector clients, or with large organizations is a plus. In addition, the candidate should have:
•the ability to work as part of a team
•excellent verbal and oral communication skills
•strong analytical skills
•knowledge of technologies relevant to transportation innovation
•proficiency is Microsoft Office required

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
