Hack the Hood launched in 2013 with a mission to build a tech sector that works for everyone. We started out introducing early career youth of color, ages 16-25, to technology education and workforce opportunities through web design. In seven years, we have reached over 1100 young people who have built over 450 websites for small business owners in Oakland and the greater Bay Area.

For 2021, Hack the Hood is deepening and expanding. We believe now, this time of racial equity and technological advancement, our best value add to address the economic mobility for communities of color is to train young people for the future of work and connect them to tech career pathways.

We’re on a mission to cultivate the next generation of computational thinkers. We believe that, when equipped with data science knowledge, learners are best positioned to upskill for long-term career opportunities in the most in-demand job area across industries.

About the role

In the next five years, we will train 5000 young people with the data science and data literacy skills they need to be prepared for the future of work. There are exciting (and urgent) initiatives in the works. Now, all we need is the right Senior Manager of Curriculum & Training to join our team!

In this role, you will be responsible for creating and implementing rigorous data science curricula and inclusive learning experiences across the U.S. You will work closely with industry and post-secondary partners, and will be responsible for setting the tone for our education programs across sites.

We’re seeking a teammate with practical data science and STEM education knowledge, technical expertise, curriculum design experience. We are a small organization, so a self-starter who appreciates individual and team accountability is a plus.

The Senior Manager of Curriculum & Training will be responsible for:

-Curriculum Design

  • Designing web design & data science fundamentals curriculum and training experience for program attendees

-Data Collection & Assessment

  • Implementing a data tracking system to assess learner outcomes across national sites & curricula
  • Collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data to refine the curriculum
  • Researching methods to engage students of color in STEM career pathways; using data to inform curriculum design
  • Staying informed of STEM education and relevant technological advances, conferences, articles, and sharing with team and relevant stakeholders (i.e. Board members, partners, etc.)

-Instructor/Facilitator Training

  • Lead curriculum training for national Hack the Hood instructors/facilitators
  • Collaborate with programs team to design best practices sessions for teaching early career youth

We’re excited to connect with candidates who have

  • A passion for inclusion in technology.
  • Experience working with and building curriculum for Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students
  • STEM BS degree and minimum 3 years experience (a huge plus for data science and web design technical expertise, experience in the tech, tech education or nonprofit STEM sectors)
  • Theoretical/scientific understanding of computer science at a broad level and Practical computer science skills application represented by demonstrable experience (technical portfolio) or bachelor’s degree
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and ability to thrive in fast-paced environments
  • Education/Design/ -- teaching technology, vs. good tech -- Teaching experience
