ABOUT STEPSIZE

Our mission is to make software development universally accessible.

Software fuels progress, but creating and maintaining it is hard. It’s painful to think about all the ideas that never saw the light of day because of this, and how different the world could be if they had.

We want to live in a world where anyone can create software on their own, without technical knowledge.

This is a multi-decade plan. We’re aware of it, but we don’t shy away from it. Stepsize and its mission are backed by some of the best investors in the world, including Stride.vc, Techstars, Connect, Index, and Unusual Ventures, and Angels from Facebook, Uber, and more.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We can’t make software development universally accessible today, but we can accelerate it. So the journey begins with software development teams.

Today, Stepsize’s SaaS product helps growing software engineering organisations manage technical debt.

Tech debt management is a huge under-served market. Gartner estimates the cost of technical debt will double to $4 trillion by 2023, and that organisations who manage technical debt properly ship software 50% faster. Stripe also found that engineers spend 33% of their time dealing with technical debt. Most importantly, when poorly managed, it makes engineers miserable.

With Stepsize, engineering teams can identify technical debt that will get in the way of their roadmap, and address it before it does. It integrates with all the tools engineers use so that they can report tech debt and its cost to their business without ever leaving their workflow. Engineering and Product leadership can then use this data to prioritise the right pieces of debt.

Tomorrow we’ll help teams create software much faster thanks to our code intelligence.

Helping teams manage tech debt requires that we develop a deep understanding of code and how it relates to business requirements. We’re investing heavily in research to eventually be able to automate certain mundane activities and assist with others so they can be done much faster.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This paves the way to our long term vision of universal software development.

The data software development teams generate in their day-to-day represents how human concepts become functioning software. By assisting teams in that process, we'll gradually deepen our understanding of how the sausage gets made. Eventually, Stepsize will become a sausage software factory.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

As a Growth Marketer, you’ll be leading the creation of our bottom-up adoption growth model.

This means running weekly Growth sprints and conducting experiments to test all your ideas and identify the best acquisition channels as quickly as possible. The goal being to drive free trial sign ups from Software and DevOps Engineers, Team Leads, and Architects at growing software companies, and later nurture leads to ultimately convert them to our paid product.

We're looking for someone data driven, curious, creative, who can ruthlessly prioritise, focus, and execute, and who won't be afraid to own this part of Stepsize.

Some of the channels we’ve seen success with so far:

  • Content (see blog.stepsize.com)
  • Cold email and LinkedIn outreach
  • Paid Search Advertising (e.g. AdWords)
  • Talks at events (e.g. see ProdPad webinar)

You’ll be working directly with Alex (Co-founder & CEO), Nick (Co-founder & Product), and Stefanie (Operations & Growth), with support from the rest of the Stepsize team, to run and improve each of these channels, as well as find new ones.

This includes:

  • Establishing a testing plan and setting up and running experiments from scratch. We want you to find the channels which really work for acquisition at Stepsize.
  • Helping us set up a data and insight driven company. You'll be creating hypotheses, testing and statistically evaluating results to drive learnings.
  • Learning about Stepsize's different customers and their needs. You'll use these learnings as the basis for your Growth experiments.
  • Shaping the direction growth takes at Stepsize. You’d be one of the founding members of the Growth team, with all the opportunities (and challenges) this presents.
  • You’d be the 10th member of the team. We want a real team player, who is flexible to support things that are outside of their role.
  • Whilst this role will focus on acquisition initially, we'd love an all rounder who wants to optimise all the pirate metrics.

REQUIREMENTS

Profile

Basically, getting users to sign up to B2B products is what you do for a living. You are part of, or at least have ties with, communities of software developers such as frontend and backend Javascript. You may be:

  • A marketer with technical skills who can’t be constrained to specialise in one channel
  • A software engineer who grew to love Growth Hacking and is making a career out of it

Technical knowledge & Experience

More than anything, you’re curious and resourceful enough to learn anything you need to conduct your experiments, regardless of the channel. You've shown an ability and hunger to own problems, and pick up the right tools and technologies to get things done. You have:

  • Applicable knowledge of JS, HTML, CSS, and more generally the development skills you need to run your experiments. For example, enough to cobble together APIs or embed GA and other tools into a website without requiring help from a software engineer
  • Experience with website builders (e.g. Unbounce or Webflow)
  • Technical SEO and copywriting skills
  • Experience with Paid Search Advertising, A/B testing, analytics (e.g. GA, pirate metrics etc.), outreach, and social media

Personality

We look for people who behave, communicate, and think in ways that exemplify the culture that we want to preserve and nurture as the company grows.

Behaviour

Initiative

Something can be done better? Something doesn't look right? You take it upon yourself to bring it up and do something about it.

Ownership

Your work is yours. You own the journey, the successes, and the failures.

Pragmatism

You adapt to the situation at hand. In particular, you recognise:

Team work

You cultivate good team work and understand its value. You make the most of your teammates’ knowledge, and you enjoy helping them back.

Communication

Listening

You realise that being a good communicator is mostly about being a good listener.

Efficiency, clarity, and precision

You value efficiency so you're constantly solving for the shortest path solution in any exchange.

Understand > convince

You focus on understanding the other person's perspective when you have a disagreement before even considering convincing them that yours is the right one.

Over-communicate

You have a tendency to over-communicate to build alignment with the team.

Thought process

Intellectual curiosity

You see your education as a life long project and driving it forward a priority.

Intellectual security

You see being wrong as an opportunity to learn from your peers rather than as a display of weakness or something to be ashamed of.

Intellectual honesty

You look for the best argument for and against every idea, regardless of where the idea came from, and in the end the best argument wins. Ego never gets in the way of truth.

Intellectual humility

You respect established knowledge, recognise its value, and make the most of it whenever you can...

Intellectual independence

...but ultimately you make up your own mind about things. Even about things that are widely accepted to be the case.

Benefits

Work remotely! Stepsize is a distributed company where we aim to work within the same reasonable range of timezones (e.g. + or -2h either side of CET). You can work from anywhere and anytime within that time frame :)

  • Stepsize will fund your remote setup! Whether you need screens, desks, a better chair, a desk in a shared office space, or anything to accommodate your setup, we’ll help. We’re a small team and can totally tailor this offer to your situation (e.g. childcare)
  • Regular company get-togethers which include work and play! We visited Morocco together earlier this year—ask to see the pics when you apply 😄
  • Remote company lunch on Fridays on Stepsize using your local food delivery service
  • Flexible holiday allowance
  • Private health insurance
  • Own a part of Stepsize! We want you to have skin in the game so we offer some of the most generous stock options packages in startup-land

Next steps

If this all sounds exciting to you and you’d like to be considered for this position, fantastic! Drop us a line at [email protected] and tell us a bit about yourself and why you'd like to apply for this position (include some sort of CV please).

Our process looks like this:

  • 1) We’ll screen your profile.
  • 2) Your first 30-60 min video call will be with Alex (Co-founder & CEO) so we can find out more about your background and introduce Stepsize.
  • 3) Should both parties decide to proceed, you’ll work on a short, timed (90min) analytical take-home exercise which aims to test how comfortable you are with key Growth concepts and your problem solving skills.
  • 4) We’ll schedule a half day for you to meet the whole team, finish the interview process, and ask any questions. We’ll have various technical & behavioural conversations, and hang out over Zoom.
  • 5) We may also ask more senior candidates to have a conversation with one of our investors and advisors.

We can then take as much time as is necessary to ensure that you are happy with the role before progressing to the offer stage.
