Information Technology
Information Technology (IT) at Pew takes a proactive approach toward the use of technology to increase the organization's capacity for high-quality strategic philanthropy. Executive leadership at Pew recognizes the importance of technology and supports initiatives to advance the institution's goals and maintain a leadership position in the philanthropic community. As a result, IT is in a mode of continuous improvement, applying technology to the pursuit of the goals of the institution.
The department consists of highly competent professionals who are responsible for the technology needs of Pew staff, as well as for Pew's subsidiaries. IT is organized into distinct areas of responsibility, including project and portfolio management, the development and operation of enterprise systems, technology support, cybersecurity, and infrastructure operations.
Position Overview
The Director, Infrastructure Operations and Security is a senior member of the leadership of Information Technology and manages the groups responsible for the design and operation of Pew's global technology infrastructure; the support and training of Pew's users; and the security of Pew's technology and information across the organization's global footprint. This position regularly interacts with leadership from all areas of Pew. It requires significant knowledge of infrastructure, cloud computing, telecommunications, and cybersecurity programs and operations. The position also requires a nuanced understanding of how technology can support the work of the institution and which technologies best serve Pew.
The director leads a team of engineering and technical support professionals, vendors, and service providers involved in operations and complex projects spanning multiple areas of information technology. The director reports to the Vice President, Information Technology, and Chief Information Officer.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees a team of engineering professionals responsible for the design and operation of on-premise and cloud computing infrastructure, networks and connectivity, unified communications, conference room technologies, and other telecommunication and collaboration infrastructure at Pew.
  • Oversees a team of technical support professionals responsible for the delivery of technical support and training and the procurement of all technology related items for Pew. Develops strategy related to support, training, end-user computing, software and devices.
  • In conjunction with the VP/CIO, the director is responsible for the ongoing development and implementation of Pew's cybersecurity plans and initiatives. Oversees a team of cybersecurity professionals responsible for security operations.
  • Coordinates internal and external experts in security to align services and offerings to Pew's business; the auditing and verification of Pew's security program; and ensures that Pew remains in compliance with all applicable security regulations and frameworks. Fosters an environment of security awareness and constant vigilance.
  • Partners with VP/CIO to align strategy, operating plans, and department goals with the current and emerging work of the institution; designs and delivers related communications, including executive summaries of strategy, related risks, rewards, and costs.
  • Implements a metrics-based focus for measuring performance, availability, service levels, and vendors.
  • Responsible for all aspects of Pew's technology disaster recovery plan.
  • Establishes objectives and team performance requirements.
  • Coaches and mentors managers at various levels as well as team members; identifies opportunities to improve skills and technical knowledge, and provides regular feedback about progress.
  • Continues to develop a broad knowledge of systems and technologies and how these can be applied to business objectives. Participates in conferences, seminars, and other professional development activities to maintain current in relevant professional disciplines.
  • Contributes to and participates in tasks of the Information Technology department as assigned. Participates in Pew-wide projects as requested.
  • 12+ years' experience in the design and operation of enterprise-grade information technology infrastructure, technology support, and cybersecurity in an enterprise environment.
  • 5+ years' experience managing teams with both direct and indirect reports.
  • A demonstrated ability to leverage and coordinate specialized technology vendors and consultants to supplement and extend Pew's IT team and capabilities.
  • A significant understanding of information technology security frameworks, policies, and best practices and the ability to scale these to the institution's needs.
  • A positive leadership style, including the ability to establish a professional business environment, and the ability to manage subordinate team members to achieve the goals of the unit.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate strategy and sophisticated technology in non-technical language to executive management and business leaders. Excellent listening skills. Highly articulate.
  • Strong public speaking skills. Confidence in presenting one's ideas and diplomatically persuading others as appropriate.
  • The ability to understand organizational structure and culture and how this impacts the delivery of technology services to staff. The ability to navigate complex organizational dynamics and exert influence in business relationships.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
Travel
Occasional travel between Pew's offices as required. Additional travel required to attend trainings, seminars or conferences.
