ABOUT CAPITAL: Capital (www.captec.io) is a New York-based investment startup that is augmenting decades of financial markets expertise with a proprietary set of AI / machine learning tools designed to disrupt the traditional financial ecosystem and reimagine antiquated investment processes that have failed to keep pace with technology. The company was founded by alumni from Stanford, Oxford (Rhodes Scholarship), Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ), KPMG, Class Dojo, and more. The team has over 75 years of experience on Wall Street and Silicon Valley, has raised over $250M to date from top-tier investment firms and has recently been featured in TechCrunch and Business Insider.
CAPITAL is seeking candidates for a Chief Operating Officer position who are available to start immediately.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
General
- Lead day-to-day operations and deliver on the execution of directives from the planning process against the strategic vision for the company
- Serve as key strategic advisor to President, CEO and senior leadership team
- Directly manage the executive team, conduct weekly 1:1s with department heads and foster their professional growth as leaders and managers
- Build consensus among cross-functional teams and influence decision making with leadership audiences
- Own Capital’s internal ”bizops” function and all relevant business intelligence tools, often integrating off-the-shelf products with custom code and occasional input from our engineering team to make internal functions world class.
- Take complete ownership of projects/ programs from cradle to grave: business case, scope, cost, schedule, action cycles, risks, issues, decisions, interdependencies and milestones
Strategy
- Build the framework for the analysis behind company-wide strategic decisions related to all functions
- Run organizational planning and business rhythm processes in alignment with all other functions to develop vision, mission, goals, objectives and key results (OKRs), resource and capital plans, etc...
- Identify and implement new initiatives with key stakeholders to develop, champion, and launch new initiatives
- Drive and monitor the development of Capital’s culture
- Maintain harmony and ensure shared responsibility of business objectives with focus on team development and employee career growth.
- Act and operate as an internal consultant, working directly with multiple stakeholders, management, and various related departments be able to optimize team performance
- Oversee the creation, management, and delivery of executive level reporting, including weekly, monthly, quarterly status reports to manage risks and issues and improve team communication and collaboration
Operations
- Own and grow our recruiting operations and oversee new employee onboarding and training programs
- Engage employees through meaningful training and growth opportunities
- Establish an operating rhythm of the business to ensure the organization is running effectively and efficiently to meet goals and objectives
- Create, manage and maintain specific communications and cadence for All-Hands meetings, QBRs, team meetings, ongoing communications, etc...
- Develop, track and automate key KPIs across the team to track strategic goals, milestones and accomplishments.
Finance
- Work closely with the finance team / CFO to plan and manage the budget including annual, quarterly and monthly expense tracking, measure and track ROI and reconcile and explain discrepancies
- Find and pursue cost reduction opportunities
- Set Capital up to “dog food” The Capital Machine by using it to run board meetings, credit committees and reporting to executives. The entire capital allocation and business decision-making process should take place on The Capital Machine and you should be in charge of making sure that process runs smoothly.
- Assist with fundraising as needed
- Manage outside service providers (legal, benefits, insurance, etc…) and integrate them seamlessly into operations
REQUIREMENTS:
Professional Experience
- 20+ years of professional experience, including early experience Tier I roles (high-growth startups, management consulting, investment banking, private equity, venture capital, Top 10 tech, etc…)
- Experience successfully growing (and ideally exiting) a startup in a senior leadership role with P&L ownership (e.g. CEO, COO, GM)
- Fintech experience is a plus but not mandatory
- Undergraduate or graduate training in engineering / computer science or extensive professional experience working as an executive amongst teams of engineers is highly desirable
Personal Qualities
- A deep understanding of transformational / servant leadership and why it is infinitely superior to traditional management
- A natural confidence and gravitas that creates “soft influence” in both internal and external communications
- Extremely high EQ and the ability to maintain harmony and cohesion with a diverse group of executives and also serve as a tool for conflict resolution
- The ability to lead a seasoned and extremely high-caliber team without be seen as micromanaging or patronizing
- An understanding of what Sun Tzu meant when he said: “Having once received His Majesty’s commission to be the general of his forces, there are certain commands of His Majesty which, acting in that capacity, I am unable to accept” and knowing where and when to apply this maxim
- Cross-functional experience across all key business lines including sales, marketing, investing, product, engineering, finance, legal, etc…
- The ability to “herd cats” and keep on top of dozens of institutional initiatives at once, instinctively prioritizing the ones that matter most
- 99.9% self-sufficient – while we expect that you will need some guidance from the board, ultimately we need to trust that we don’t need to stay on top of what you’re doing
- Fluency in early stage startups – you should thrive in chaotic environments and instinctively know what is signal and what is noise when 1,000 things are happening at once
