As the Head of Data Science & Engineering within Genentech’s People Analytics function, you will sit on the People Analytics Leadership Team and wield a unique ability to engage business executives, design experiments, spearhead analytical projects, and build automated tools to positively impact the workplace


About the People Analytics Team

We appreciate that we've built a reasonably sized, highly effective team (10 staff) and strive to be a great place to work.  The team has two departments: The Strategy & Solutions team which focuses on customer delivery, strategy, and internal process quality and the Data Science & Engineering team which builds data science models, creates automated infrastructure, and develops tools to improve organization, team, and employee success.  The team integrates 3rd party platforms such as Visier, Plotly, and Typeform with custom developed homegrown applications. People Analytics directly reports to the CHRO of Genentech and supports the Genentech and Roche organization.

The People Analytics Head of Data Science & Engineering will report to the Head of People Analytics and sit on the People Analytics Leadership Team. Your key responsibilities will be:


Responsibilities

  • Lead the People Analytics Data Science & Engineering team which consists of 3 full time employees who report to you;  Partner closely with the People Analytics Strategy & Solutions team
  • Establish a vision and create pathways through which HR can be an innovative, technology focused, and data driven service provider to the business
  • Build a pipeline of project work and tools to advance the work of the People Analytics team
  • Contribute ideas, design surveys, and build algorithms that will influence people and business outcomes across Genentech and Roche
  • Produce recommendations to drive HR investment and talent management decisions that improve the delivery of HR services across Genentech & Roche
  • Communicate complex statistical concepts to non-technical audience in both written and verbal mediums;  Provide coaching regarding use and interpretation of data
  • Influence senior business leaders through strong communication skills and deep subject matter expertise in order to turn insights into action and impact
  • Be an active thought partner to our customers from design to execution across the experiments we run, the surveys we design, the analyses we execute, and the dashboards/apps we build
  • Develop understanding of Genentech/Roche data environment and build relationships with key local and global stakeholders (partners, customers, and broader analytics community)


Who You Are

  • Masters Degree or PhD in a quantitative field (Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Operations Research, Biostatistics, etc).  PhD preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years, post academia, of professional experience delivering models, algorithms, and automated tools that drive business decisions and improve business outcomes
  • Experience managing and leading teams
  • Demonstrable leadership in the field: research publications, conference presentations, speaking engagements
  • No prior HR experience is required, but should have a strong desire to learn the domain

  • Specialized Knowledge / Skills
  • Presentation, influencing, and storytelling skills
  • Comfortable employing agile methodology
  • Intellectual curiosity and ability to handle high levels of ambiguity
  • Experience in survey design to develop reliable/valid measures and sampling representative data
  • Proficiency with classical statistics and machine learning approaches to fit models and estimate their performance;  Experience automating and productionalizing machine learning models / algorithms using R and/or python
  • Experience working with software engineers to build web apps and microservices
  • Experience creating data visualizations and dashboards that distill complex analyses into meaningful and accessible insights and recommendations
  • Experience developing shared code (e.g., git and unit testing, programming patterns, libraries/packages), creating data pipelines, and putting models into production
  • Proficiency in one or both of R and python
  • Fluency in SQL and RDBMS
