Director, Information Technology

The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) is seeking a Director, Information Technology, reporting to the SVP of Operations/CFO. This person should be a skilled technology leader who also has solid development skills and can shift from high level strategy to the occasional hands-on coding. The individual will guide a small team to implement and update technology solutions that improve capabilities and efficiency while ensuring reliability and security. Range of oversight includes all network and telecom infrastructure, hardware, software, phones, reporting tools, and web platforms. This individual will stay abreast of new technology developments relevant to non-profits and translate that data into strategic and tactical improvements that add real value to AWEA. He/she is expected to stay attuned to the needs of the users and ensure that system solutions are well-integrated into ongoing operations.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Understanding AWEA’s technology infrastructure, assessing employee and member needs, staying abreast of new developments, and updating the technology roadmap and tactical plan.
  • Working with business users and outside vendors to improve systems, including a planned update to our association management system and web platform/CMS over the next 2 years.
  • Providing helpful data for management decision making by ensuring databases have quality data and assisting in the development of user reports.
  • Overseeing ongoing IT operations to ensure current, reliable systems with minimal operating risk.

Incumbent will lead and coach the IT team to deliver timely, quality products and services while building new skills. This position is a part of AWEA’s senior management team serving as a critical liaison role to vet technology options and help guide the organization.The scope of this role includes negotiating with vendors to ensure they are active partners delivering relevant, cost-effective, high quality solutions for AWEA.

Education and/or Experience

Qualified applicants may possess any combination of education and experience enabling them to successfully perform the responsibilities of the position. Preferred qualifications are: Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related field or equivalent academic and work experience is required. Advanced degree a plus. Incumbent must have three or more years of experience leading IT functions, preferably in a nonprofit organization, and similar depth of experience running technology projects. Knowledge of transaction processing systems and database structure and management is essential. Working knowledge of current database and development tools is important, especially SQL, HTML, web services and content management tools, SharePoint, and Microsoft/Exchange platforms. Knowledge of both in-house and cloud based system infrastructure and security and project management best practices is essential. Seeking a strong planner and project manager with demonstrated experience collaborating with business leaders to develop and deliver strategic and practical improvements. Operations leadership experience in a production environment, ideally at a mid-sized association or other non-profit, is key. Attributes should include:

  • Strong commitment to customer service, reliability, and quality.
  • Proven ability to lead a progressive IT group and balance dynamic priorities.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for learning and teaching new technologies. Able to communicate technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
