In partnership with the Director, Content Development, the Deputy Content Editor, Audience Growth, works across content areas to develop new audience growth and engagement content strategies, creating innovative forms of content to attract new audiences while shaping, and curating content to deeply engage with our existing audience. This role will focus heavily on launching and enhancing CR's membership program, while working with the rest of our editorial, marketing, social, and testing teams to create consumer-facing tools, games, polls, quizzes, and other regular online interactions with audience members. Role will also regularly monitor CR's audiences looking for opportunities and providing recommendations on how to engage with communities of users who may have common interests, tailoring content and interactions to match those interests.

  • Serves as the right hand to Director in working with content stakeholders to develop high-impact content for new markets and services, authoring tests, creating visualizations, customizing content and embedding them on CR web properties.
  • Plays a strategic role in conceiving, launching, monitoring and shaping content ideas in conjunction with leaders from content development , marketing, engagement/policy, as well as other stakeholders including fundraising, communications and business development.
  • Works with the content development team to produce a strategy for developing and integrating interactive content (polls, quizzes, tests, etc.) across CR properties and brands, with an emphasis on our membership offerings
  • May manage direct report(s) who engage and curate content for target audiences.
  • Partners with Product Testing and Survey Research to develop ways for consumers to participate in product tests, secret-shopping missions, and service evaluations.
  • Integrates audience and community feedback into strategic development plans for future content to ensure relevant content mix
  • Stays up to date on trends and best practices in crowdsourcing, UGC, audience engagement, analytics, and digital journalism. Monitors outside news sources for trends, breaking stories, etc.
  • Creates and optimizes custom social media programming for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Instagram, Snapchat, and other networks.
  • Helps to ensure messaging supports Consumer Reports' mission of advancing consumer fairness and safety in the marketplace.
  • Oversees, schedules and monitors work of necessary partners providing content for audience growth projects. Provides feedback on performance.
  • Monitors and manages to project budgets. Oversees and manages costs associated with freelancers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



Bachelor's degree with 7-10 years' experience as a writer in a fast-paced, news-oriented environment, preferably where quizzes, polls, and other interactives were an integrated part of the content development process. Prior experience creating, growing, participating-in, and managing user communities, with a strong understanding of crowdsourcing, UGC, and social platforms required. Attention to detail, sourcing quality and accuracy are a must for this role. Comfort with polling and data-driven work is also a plus.
