Working with the Senior Programmer Analyst and reporting to the Director of Digital Communications, the Web Developer will be responsible for maintenance support of the Harvard College website, including the Admissions & Financial Aid web presences. The Harvard College website serves 3.5 million users annually and is a hub for news, resources and social media for the College and Harvard College Admissions & Financial Aid. It encompasses a variety of high profile assets for the College and Admissions & Financial Aid including: the Net Price calculator for Financial Aid, the Harvard College admitted student website, the Harvard College Admissions blog, 65+ videos, and financial aid forms and downloads. Reporting to the Director of Digital Communications, this position will be responsible for technical management, maintenance, and enhancement of the College, Admissions & Financial Aid website. The role will also perform technical oversight, continuing development, and implementation of web portals and web applications related to the admissions process and the release of undergraduate admissions decisions. This includes integration with the admitted students website, our admissions database and event registration. The role is also responsible for meeting the needs & requirements of the Harvard College digital experience for current students.
S/he will also be responsible for the following:

  • The web developer will work independently to translate business requirements into technical specs and then configure, build, deploy and support Drupal modules.
  • Works with Harvard College, Admissions, and Financial Aid staff to ensure presentation, technology, and usability of websites meets modern standards and best practices.
  • Ensure the stability, security and uptime of the website and web portals during high-traffic time periods related to admissions decisions.
  • Develop new Drupal modules and edit existing ones
  • Design, develop and enhance internal and external mission-critical web applications
  • Design and develop new landing pages and portals related to the admissions process
  • Maintain cloud-based hosting environment with third-party vendor
  • Manage website and application source code using best practices for workflow
  • Customization and implementation of Google Analytics

Basic Qualifications

3-5 years professional experience.
Bachelor's Degree required.

Additional Qualifications
  • HTML5, CSS3, Javascript, and JQuery
  • Understanding of XML/XSL structure and presentation
  • Familiar with UX principles including responsive design
  • Strong understanding of database design, architecture, methods and integration. Comfort with ETL and ER diagramming toolsets and concepts.
  • Familiar with SQL (MS, Oracle, mySQL preferred), and complex queries
  • Familiarity with PHP and writing custom Drupal themes and modules
  • Current expertise with SDLC best practices and/or project management
  • Experience in higher education preferred
  • Computer Science or engineering preferred but not required
