Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

The selected candidate will be a part of the SAE-1's Database Management team as an Oracle Database Administrator. This position will support multiple database systems, perform patching and upgrades, and other Database Administrator (DBA) and application server functions as needed.



This position will be filled at either an Oracle Database Administrator 3 or 4, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.



Oracle Database Administrator 3 ($84,300 - $139,000)
This position requires an experienced professional with a full understanding of specialized IT field plus working knowledge of other related IT fields. This position is for the fully qualified, career-oriented, IT professional.



The selected candidate will be able to:

  • Design, model, configure, test and install Oracle 11g and 12c databases independently
  • Provide support services for database creation, performance, monitoring, tuning and capacity planning
  • Upgrade and patch Oracle 11g and 12c databases independently
  • Design and build physical data structures
  • Recommend, develop and enforce policies and procedures for maintaining the security and integrity of Oracle databases
  • Ensure the database meets availability and disaster recovery requirements
  • Configure backup / restore utilities and develop disaster recovery policies and procedures
  • Plan, design and maintain Oracle 11g and 12c RAC environments
  • Provide 24x7 on call support as part of a scheduled rotation with other team members

Oracle Database Administrator 4 ($92,600 - $154,600)
In addition to the above duties, the selected candidate must:

  • Provide technical leadership
  • Provide project leadership
  • May provide guidance and mentoring to less-experience Database Administrators

Positions at both levels require a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science or related field or the work experience equivalent.



Minimum Job Requirements for Database Administrator 3:

  • Solid experience in the design, maintenance and administration of relational databases
  • Extensive experience with Oracle RAC administration 11G, 12C and Oracle Data Guard
  • Extensive experience tuning Oracle 11g/12c databases
  • Experience with backup & recovery strategies using RMAN, data replication and SMO-Snap Manager for Oracle
  • Experience with database monitoring tools / OEM
  • Experience in refreshing databases across similar and dissimilar hardware
  • Experience in recovering a database/table/tablespace
  • Scripting abilities using Python Perl, Shell or JVM-based languages
  • Demonstrated experience with problem diagnosis and resolution
  • Effective interpersonal communications and team player
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related tasks as needed
  • Demonstrated experience in providing full lifecycle support for Oracle databases


Minimum Job Requirements for Database Administrator 4:

  • Experience with large scale database design/architecture
  • Strong, hands-on working knowledge of relational databases and experience working with an Oracle 11g / 12c large Data Warehouse environment
  • Strong performance tuning of Oracle Databases and tuning application SQL
  • Experience with Oracle Transparent Data Encryption a plus
  • Experience with OVM hypervisor a plus
  • Oracle certification a plus
