Chief Information Security Officer

The University of Toronto (UofT) seeks a highly-effective leader for the position of Chief Information Security Officer (CISO). As an inaugural appointment, the incoming CISO has an extraordinary opportunity to support the research and learning environment of Canada’s leading university.

Reporting to the Chief Information Officer (CIO), the CISO has oversight over the University’s Information Security Program, ensuring the institution’s networks, systems and information are protected in a manner that meets compliance with regulatory and policy requirements. The CISO is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and reporting on information security risks to the CIO and the University’s senior administrative team, and works with senior administration and Governing Council to determine acceptable levels of risk for the organization. The CISO provides strategic leadership to technology staff and managers on securing university systems and data assets system-wide, and proactively works with UofT Faculties and Departments to implement practices that meet defined policies and standards for information security.

For the role of CISO, a computer science and/or business administration degree at the graduate level as well as relevant certification(s) in the field, or an acceptable equivalent combination of academic credentials and professional experience is required. The ideal candidate has a proven track record of developing information security policies and procedures for a large and complex organization, and a record of successfully implementing programs within a dynamic environment. The preferred candidate has: excellent verbal and written communication skills; superior interpersonal skills and a collaborative leadership style; the ability to act calmly and competently in high-pressure, high-stress situations; a knack for clearly communicating security and risk-related concepts to technical and nontechnical audiences; and, knowledge and understanding of relevant legal and regulatory requirements and legislation. The successful candidate must be: a sought-after advisor and problem solver who can assess risk levels with objective rationale and find sound solutions; an administrator who demonstrates good judgment; and, a leader who brings an innovative and strategic lens to their approach.
