The Data Strategist is an exciting new role at Children’s Council, responsible for providing strategic leadership over the design, implementation, integrity, and reporting function of our data infrastructure. The biggest challenge we face is the sheer volume of data split across various systems.  Children’s Council needs to develop and implement an integrated data reporting system (data warehouse and reporting server) that allows us to accurately and efficiently track and report key indicators, subsidy funding, identify patterns and outcomes for the target population, better understand the needs of families and providers, and support research and continuous system improvements.

We are searching for a data strategist who can bring life to numbers and tell our compelling story through data. This person believes in the importance of supporting decisions with data and that all nonprofit organizations should have data-backed proof of their impact. We need a full-process strategist who can not only look at all our current data and see how it relates, but also interpret data and analyze results to create dashboards and other outputs that inform our programming and engage our key constituents. Our ideal candidate for this role is a technologically savvy data-lover who enjoys championing the power of data and has the chops to design and implement a valuable system that will elevate our programming for years to come.

Key Responsibilities

  • Takes strategic management role over data across the organization, champions data to key stakeholders
  • Establishes requirements and assesses the quality of the data in our current databases
  • Assists in creating and maintaining and a data catalog and data map
  • Creates and implements data standards, policies, and business rules
  • Establishes data access security requirements
  • Independently summarizes and interprets data using statistical techniques and provides ongoing reports from a variety of sources to create dashboards and other presentation materials and tools for key constituents
  • Develops and implements databases, data collection systems, data analytics and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality
  • Acquires data from primary and/or secondary data sources and maintains databases/data systems
  • Maintains integrity of data and champions clean data entry and collection with staff
  • Provides training and technical assistance with the design and management of collecting and reporting data
  • Supervises a small team of analysts to implement data policies

Key Qualities

  • Fluency in communicating data insights to people at various levels of data literacy
  • Expert data-handling and report-building skills
  • Comfortable defining a project with ambitious goals and a bringing along staff who have limited experience in data analytics
  • Persuasive leadership with the ability to influence others to take action
  • Passion for translating data into better services for humans; you can recognize signals from data, use them to tell a story and follow up with intelligent recommendations
  • Creativity; data is messy, inputs are different and there are a lot of nuances
  • You’ve got that scrappy, “let’s figure it out” non-profit mentality and an infectious enthusiasm for learning
  • Unwavering integrity and a track record of success

Required Education & Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience involving quantitative data analysis and complex problem solving
  • Bachelor’s in Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Information Management, Statistics, or related field
  • Must be organized and extremely detail-orientated
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time management skills
  • Technical expertise regarding data models, database design development, data mining and segmentation techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze statistical data and to present findings clearly and concisely in verbal, written and graphic form
  • Strong knowledge and experience with reporting packages, databases (SQL etc.), ETL
  • Strong knowledge of SQL is a must
