Senior Business Advisor (Focus on Fintech Industry)

OSC LaunchPad Permanent, Full-Time File #17-72 The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC or Commission) is the statutory body responsible for regulating Ontario’s capital markets in accordance with the mandate established in the provincial Securities Act and the Commodity Futures Act. The Commission’s mandate is to provide protection to investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices and to foster fair and efficient capital markets and confidence in capital markets. The goal of OSC LaunchPad is to modernize regulation to support financial technology (fintech) innovation. OSC LaunchPad consists of a core team, with an extended team made up of dedicated staff from each of the operational branches. OSC LaunchPad has three main focuses:

  • Engage with the fintech community to better understand its needs and help it understand the regulatory landscape;
  • Offer the opportunity for businesses to request direct support in navigating the requirements and potentially provide flexibility in how they meet their obligations; and
  • Take learnings from working with innovative businesses and apply them to help modernize regulation for the benefit of similar businesses. 

Summary: OSC LaunchPad is currently hiring for a full-time Senior Business Advisor, who has direct business experience in the fintech industry, and operational experience in the securities industry.  You will be responsible for assisting new online and fintech companies navigate the OSC’s and Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) regulatory framework. The role is also responsible for carrying out the key functions of the OSC LaunchPad initiative, including engagement with the fintech community. This is an excellent opportunity for professionals looking for challenging and innovative work in the securities industry.  

The role is responsible for developing solutions through the application of specialized operational knowledge, fundamental principles of regulation and/or technical expertise.  The Senior Business Adviser is sought out as a ‘go to’ person and expert resource by others, has very strong project management skills, and is able to deal effectively with unusual issues and operational questions for fintech businesses.

Key Responsibilities: As the Senior Business Advisor, and as a member of the core OSC LaunchPad team, you will draw upon your direct business experience in the fintech industry to review the operations of innovative businesses seeking guidance and/or the opportunity to test their products, services and applications in a live sandbox environment.  Work requires the resolution of unusual problems affecting the oversight and regulatory framework of novel fintech business models.  You will work closely with the core and extended team to resolve complex and novel issues using your strong judgement and analytical skills.  You will represent the OSC LaunchPad and engage directly with the fintech community at speaking events and meetups.  You will prepare recommendations to senior and executive management and the Commission, engage with domestic and global regulators, including members of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) Regulatory Sandbox.   

You Have: As the ideal candidate, you are a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) in good standing or a Masters of Business Administration (MBA), with strong technology experience, and have a minimum of 8 years’ direct business experience in the fintech industry.  You have a keen interest in how technology can provide solutions for financial services and investors.  Operational experience in the securities industry would be a strong asset.  You have a demonstrated ability to make sound, practical business recommendations.  This is complemented by your ability to build positive working relationships and engage with internal and external stakeholders.  You communicate (verbal and written) ideas clearly and concisely, including when delivering presentations and responding to questions.  You can work both independently and as part of a group as needed.   Grow your career and make a difference working at the OSC.
