DEPARTMENT: BFA Interior Design

REPORTS TO: Chair, BFA Interior Design Director of Operations

POSITION OVERVIEW: Manage technical operations of the School of Visual Arts Interior Design department.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Management and Planning:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of department technologies.
  • Manage support mechanism with SVA Network, Administrative Services to jointly manage server control.
  • Manage and develop technical budget; create and oversee the department’s technical leases.
  • Supervise part time technical staff; includes Systems Admin Assistant and Digital Assets Assistant.
  • Manage design and production of departmental promotional materials such as: SVAID annual portfolio, exhibition flyers and various departmental initiatives.
  • Manage design and implementation of all departmental online and multi-media projects including: department website, social communications and department educational technology.
  • Manage and support department special projects, annual thesis and department exhibitions.
  • Maintain positive and professional relationships with other departments acting as principal technology and communications liaison.
  • Research technology and assert recommendations for classes, labs and administration.
  • Conduct department surveys using direct communication and other survey tools.

 

Server, Network and Systems Administration:

  • Recommend, plan and implement future computer technological departmental growth pertaining to networking, server and client systems.
  • Develop, deploy and test server and local and networked client systems.
  • Install, configure and maintain servers and related network hardware.
  • Recommend and plan departmental network architecture and equipment needs.
  • Coordinate with Director of Operations to analyze and evaluate networking, server and client system usage.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks and update installs on servers, local and networked client systems.
  • Establish security measures to protect systems and data from intrusion/unwanted data change.
  • Supervise back up of Departmental digital assets.
  • Supervise department keycard access system.

 

Technical Support & Maintenance:

  • Address and solve student, faculty and staff issues in respect to desktop, software, hardware and peripheral equipment needs.
  • Installation and maintenance of all software, hardware, and peripherals (printers and scanners).
  • Provide computer hardware and software support for computer lab, print room, studio desktops, faculty, administrative staff and dept. chair.
  • Propose and coordinate technical upgrades during annual departmental Capital Improvements.
  • Enforce policies and procedures for computer lab, print room and studio desktops.
  • Manage off-site equipment repairs.
  • Coordinate with IT department for advanced hardware and software troubleshooting.
  • Assist students and faculty with questions related to web-specific class projects and related technologies.

 

Departmental Support:

  • Manage a digital archive and database of all matriculated student and alumni class work.
  • Support department CIDA accreditation process.
  • Liaison with outside vendors and coordinate with director of operations on purchase requests.
  • Coordinate departmental support with staff from various administrative and educational departments in the college.
  • Maintain repair records, inventories of hardware/software.
  • Maintain an organized and clean workspace.
  • Attend weekly meetings with director of operations and department chair.

 

Training:

 

  • Conduct workshops for incoming students on computer lab, print room and studio desktop policies and procedures.
  • Train and supervise work-study assistants in hardware/software installation, effective communication methods, general troubleshooting, promoting a more effective and efficient working environment.
  • Conduct Technical workshops for department students, faculty and staff.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Excellent management abilities, communication skills and the ability to multi-task.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; must be able to represent the college and the department in a professional manner.
  • Knowledge of Windows OS and Windows Server required; knowledge of Apple OS systems a must.
  • Essential skills include creating system images, resolving hardware and software conflicts.
  • Knowledge of standards-based web design methodologies and technologies.
  • Ability to troubleshoot software and hardware a must.
  • Working knowledge of all Adobe Creative Cloud, Lightroom, AutoDesk Design suite, I.e. AutoCAD, Revit, 3-DMax, Rhino Software.
  • Design or creative production background and knowledge of technology trends and ongoing developments in the design art field a plus.
  • Ability to work independently be detail oriented, and understand basic design principles.
  • Diplomacy and professionalism when working with individuals via e-mail, over the phone, and in person.
  • Must be a team player with the ability to identify issues and be proactive in driving solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with students and faculty to resolve problems.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Available to work scheduled department evening events.
  • Flexible with one’s work schedule (Schedule is subject to change).
