We are seeking a talented, motivated and highly experienced Senior or Principal Electrical Engineer to join our Electrical Engineering Department in creating world class electrical designs for robotic systems across all of iRobot product lines. The candidate must have extensive knowledge and experience in designing power electronics subsystems including AC/DC and DC/DC converters, voltage and current regulators, battery chargers, etc. The successful candidate will lead or enjoy working within a multidisciplinary team of some of the best and brightest engineers, engaging in the analysis, design, documentation, testing and manufacturing of complex robotic systems. The candidate will also suggest and work on improvements and enhancements for existing designs, participating in troubleshooting and field failure analysis. This position requires excellent technical capabilities and communication skills.

Essential Functions/ Job Duties:

  • Develop and design solutions for complex systems or subsystems as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, with specific focus on power electronics.
  • Lead, perform, or direct and document test and verification activities at the electrical system and/or subsystem level.
  • Coordinate and/or direct activities between engineering and customers both internal and external, suppliers, trade groups and test houses.
  • Conduct reviews and/or provide significant technical analysis and commentary on the system and engineering specification, schematic, PCB design, and verification phases of development.
  • Consult with other engineers and program teams charged with sustaining engineering activities in order to ensure continuity of production or customer commitments.

Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge and experience in AC-to-DC, DC-to-DC and LDO designs
  • Trade-off analysis of conflicting requirements, especially for cost sensitive and high efficiency designs
  • Demonstrable ability to create detailed hardware and functional specifications
  • Demonstrable success in designing mixed signal analog and power subsystems as part of Microcontroller/Microprocessor based systems
  • Good understanding of control theory and practical experience especially in power conversion applications
  • Demonstrable ability to design custom magnetics, select cores and design windings for transformers and inductors.
  • Good understanding of charging Li and NiMH batteries and Smart Battery Systems
  • Experience with schematic entry and basic printed circuit board design preferably in Altium
  • Demonstrable knowledge of design for EMI, EMC, and ESD
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • 10+ years of relevant experience
  • must be able to travel up to 15%, Far East.
  • BSEE, MSEE preferred

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Experience with non-contact battery charging
  • Experience with robotic systems
  • Experience with circuit simulation tools (SPICE, Hyperlynx, etc.)
  • Experience with magnetics simulation tools (Maxwell 3D)
  • Experience with system simulation tools
  • Intermediate / advanced Altium Designer skills
  • Knowledge of DC Brush and Brushless motor driver design
  • Basic project management
  • MS Office product expertise
  • Familiarity with Microsoft SharePoint and OneNote tools
